Shipping Desk: London Gateway has cemented its position as Britain’s fastest-growing container port, handling over 3 million TEU in 2025—a remarkable 52% increase from the previous year’s 1.9 million TEU.
A New Milestone for DP World
This achievement marks a historic turning point for DP World’s UK operations. Combined with the Southampton terminal, the Dubai-based logistics giant now moves more than 5 million TEU annually. With the total UK container market estimated at just over 9 million TEU, DP World now facilitates more than half of the nation’s containerized trade.
Key Drivers of Growth
The surge in throughput at London Gateway is attributed to two primary factors:
Expansion of Capacity: The successful integration of the newly operational fourth berth.
Strategic Partnerships: Increased vessel calls from the Gemini Cooperation’s Asia-Europe routes.
Additionally, DP World’s Southampton terminal crossed the 2 million TEU threshold, further strengthening the company’s dominant market position.
£1 Billion Investment Blueprint
To sustain this trajectory, DP World has announced a massive £1 billion investment plan for London Gateway. Key highlights include:
Two New Electric Berths: Construction is underway on two additional all-electric berths, bringing the total to six. These will be capable of accommodating the world’s largest container ships.
Rail Infrastructure: A second rail terminal was commissioned in 2025 to enhance multimodal connectivity.
BOXBAY System: A £170 million investment over the next two years will introduce the cutting-edge ‘BOXBAY’ high-bay storage and handling system.
Modernizing Southampton
Simultaneously, £60 million is being invested in the Southampton terminal. By the end of this year, it is set to host Europe’s tallest quay crane fleet, ensuring the facility remains future-proof against evolving maritime demands.
Leadership Perspective
Stephen Whittingham, Executive Vice President for North Europe at DP World, stated:”Every container that moves through our terminals at London Gateway and Southampton is moving goods that underpin British business and daily life. Our UK infrastructure plays a critical role in keeping these supply chains running quickly and efficiently.”
Global Impact
Operating in over 75 countries and handling 9% of global containerized trade, DP World’s continued expansion signifies immense confidence in the UK’s trade infrastructure. London Gateway is now on a clear path to becoming Britain’s most vital container hub.
