Oil Tanker Hijacked off Somalia Coast: 17 Crew Members Taken Hostage

Shipping Desk: An oil tanker named ‘Honor 25’ was hijacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden near the Somali coast on April 21. According to maritime security reports, the vessel is a Palau-flagged tanker under the command of an Indonesian captain. Out of the 17 crew members currently held hostage, 11 are Pakistani nationals. As of now, no communication regarding ransom has been established.
International maritime observers reported that armed pirates attacked and seized control of the vessel while it was transiting the Gulf of Aden. The ship is currently anchored in an area between Hafun and Bander Beyla off the coast of Somalia.
The identities of the abducted Pakistani sailors have been confirmed by relevant authorities. Despite the seizure, the pirates have not yet made any formal ransom demands or initiated contact for the release of the hostages.
The Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean region have long been identified as high-risk zones for piracy. Analysts believe that pirates have become increasingly active in recent months, taking advantage of geopolitical instability in the Red Sea and surrounding waters, prompting international navies to heighten their vigilance.
According to a report by local media outlet Radio Kulmiye, this hijacking appears to be linked to regional politics and tribal conflicts. The vessel is owned by Osman Shire Quud, an influential businessman from Puntland. The tanker was en route to Mogadishu with a cargo of fuel last Wednesday when it was intercepted by pirates from the Osman Mohamoud clan. The report further claims that this pirate group has ties to the President of Puntland, Said Abdullahi Deni. It is suspected that the hijacking is a direct consequence of local political and tribal disputes.
Radio Kulmiye also confirmed the nationalities of the 17 crew members on board: 10 Pakistani nationals 4 Indonesian nationals 1 Myanmar national 1 Indian national 1 Sri Lankan national
Current Situation The vessel has remained under pirate control near the Bander Beyla coast for the past two days. Local sources suggest that this may not be a typical act of piracy but rather the result of a political or business dispute with the ship’s owner. The international community has expressed deep concern regarding the safety of the foreign nationals.
Embassies of the respective countries and international maritime agencies are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the rescue of the crew. However, experts fear that the rescue process could be complicated due to the involvement of local tribal influences.
